Definition of Hajj and Umrah

Definition of Hajj

Hajj is one of the five Pillars of Islam. Hajj is to visit Baitullah al-Haram in Mecca during the months of Hajj to perform certain acts of worship according to its conditions and requirements. Performing Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who can afford it.

Definition of Umrah

Umrah is visiting Baitullah al-Haram in Mecca at any time to perform certain acts of worship in accordance with the obligatory conditions and requirements. Performing umrah is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who can afford it

The Difference between hajj and Umrah

Hajj

Hajj can only be performed in the months of Hajj, which is from 1st of Syawal until dawn  10th of Dzulhijjah.

Umrah

Umrah can be performed at any time of the year except for people who are in Hajj Ihram. Umrah worship does not have wukuf  in Arafah, Mabit in Muzdalifah and Mina and throwing at Jamrah.

The benefits of performing Hajj and Umrah

There are various benefits that has been promised by Allah SWT for those who perform these two acts of worship. Among the advantages are:

 
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ حَجَّ هَذَا الْبَيْتَ فَلَمْ يَرْفُثْ وَلَمْ يَفْسُقْ رَجَعَ كَمَا وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّه

From Abu Hurairah RA narrated that Rasulullah SAW said: Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of gaining the pleasure of Allah, and with it does not utter the words of immorality, does not commit abominable deeds, will return from it free from any sins, as the day on which his mother gave birth to him (Hadith al-Bukhari).

 

 
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْعُمْرَةُ إِلَى الْعُمْرَةِ كَفَّارَةٌ لِمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَالْحَجُّ الْمَبْرُورُ لَيْسَ لَهُ جَزَاءٌ إِلَّا الْجَنَّة

Meaning:

 

From Abu Hurairah RA, indeed Rasulullah SAW said: From one umrah to another umrah removes the sin between the two and for ‘Hajj Mabrur’ there will be no reward for him except heaven (Hadith al-Bukhari).
